June 8, 2003:

Voters:

This is week two of the QOTY (Quote of the Year) semifinals. The five top quotes from this week will advance to face the top five from last week in the finals, which will take place next week. The winner will be crowned champion.

Meanwhile, I'm calculating (with the help of Alex George) the Most Quoteable Person of 2003. Results pending. The winner will receive the hope diamond, or an alternative prize determined by QOTW officials to be of roughly equal value.

Vote as normal this week: list the nominees (names only, not quotes) below, from favorite to least favorite. You can least as many or as few as you wish. Differentiate between two quotes from the same person with parenthetical statements like "Joanna (health and community)".

And now, the SEMIFINALISTS FOR QUOTE OF THE YEAR:
"This is probably just me being Catholic and pretentious, and I'm not even Catholic." -Joanna Rifkin, on part of her story
"I'm a Republican. I don't kill anyone, I just eat babies." -Ben Copans
"Miller! I had a dream last night I had to borrow your leather jacket to impersonate the Virgin Mary." -Joanna
"I'd love to tell you what happened: nothing! Because that's what happens in science." -Bree, on her scientific experiment over project week
"That's because in 1942 the British Government discontinued the singing orphan program." -Julian, on the lack of songs like 'Food' from the musical Oliver
"Did anyone else feel like they were doing the hokey pokey? You know, you put your sexuality in, you take your sexuality out, you put your liberalism in and you shake it all about." -Joanna, on the Health and Community Workshop on 'identity'
"Today I smite; yesterday I smote; and I have smoot." -Becca
"In order to make sure the grades reported are as accurate as possible, there are strict procedures--many of which resemble those of fascist regimes--..." -Mr. Weisman, administering the Spanish AP
"We have a long tradition in society of dividing life into public and private spheres. There's a wonderful invention called a door." -Mr. Wharton, addressing the sophomores' inappropriate behavior
"The U.S. history homework is always understandable, often fun, and perfect to do during your physics class." -Ms. Rome

Voting closes 5:00 pm on Tuesday.
